Tips for Staying Warm While Working Outdoors
In the wintertime the weather is the biggest hindrance to working outdoors. Cold wet and windy conditions are not only uncomfortable but can be potentially dangerous as well. It’s important to stay warm and avoid cold stress situations that can lead to accidents or injuries
Exposure to extremely cold environments can result in cold stress such as hypothermia or frostbite. While these conditions may not be a cause for concern for most people, they do pose a threat to anyone working outside for extended periods of time in below freezing conditions.
Wearing appropriate clothing is important in any cold environment. It is best to wear at least three layers to maximize warmth and stay dry. The base layer should help wick moisture away from the body, the mid layer should provide insulation, and the outer layer should protect against the elements and offer some form of venting to prevent overheating.
It is also important to wear a hat and gloves at all times in extremely cold weather. Exposing skin for prolonged periods can lead to irritation and eventually frostbite. Insulated boots and wool socks should be worn to keep feet warm and dry, and an extra change of clothing or socks can come in handy if you are sweating excessively. Properly managing perspiration is extremely important in cold climates since wet clothing is more likely to be chilled by the cold air.
