OSHA Changes Electrical Safety Standards
People who work with electricity everyday know just how dangerous it can be. Workers like utility line workers and electricians are exposed to real electrical hazards. For many years the OSHA electrical standards have helped workers lower their risk of shock, electrocution, fire and explosions. Recently, OSHA announced a final rule to improve the safety of electrical workers even more. This update comes 40 years after their original institution of electrical safety standards.
Effective July 10th, OSHA’s updated electrical safety standards go into effect. These new safety updates apply to electrical power generation, transmission, and distribution installation. The changes are aimed at outfitting workers with more appropriate safety garments like flame resistant vests.
The new standard mandates that workers must wear flame resistant personal protective equipment. Not only that, but employers are required to provide proper flame resistant personal protective equipment to their employees.
Businesses have until October 31st 2014 to comply with the new standards or risk fines for violating the new rules. If you or your workers don’t already have certified flame resistant safety gear, SafetyGearOnline.com can help you comply with the new OSHA regulations.
According to OSHA’s assistant secretary of labor, Dr. David Michaels, “This long-overdue update will save nearly 20 lives and prevent 118 serious injuries annually.”
